Durban House, in the writer's home town of Eastwood, is both the D H Lawrence Birthplace Museum and a Heritage Centre, where visitors can discover the fascinating story about the son of a miner who became one of the 20th century's most influential writers.

The romantic ruins of this 12th century Cistercian Abbey are set in the heart of a large wooded country park, with a lake and formal gardens. The abbey houses a museum about the life of the Cistercian Monks at Rufford.

The museum contains a wide range of exhibits including a number of recreated period scenes of streets, shops and houses. The gallery provides an exhibition space for local artists, designers and photographers.

A historic WWII airfield, with a wide variety of planes and aircraft, housed both outside and in large undercover display halls. Visitors can see over 70 aircraft on display, including transport aircraft, jet fighters, bombers and helicopters.

Newstead Abbey was converted into a house in the 1540s. It was once the ancestral home of Lord Byron, who was forced to sell it in 1818 to pay his debts. The extensive and beautifully landscaped grounds contain waterfalls, ponds, water gardens and Japanese gardens. Special events and Ghost Tours run throughout the season (phone for details).

This once vast forest, which covered half of Nottinghamshire, is now just a country park covering around 450 acres of ancient oaks and silver birches. However it is still large enough to experience the Robin Hood legend. Way marked trails and paths are provided through the forest, leading to the famous Major Oak. The pathways are reasonably flat and even, making it readily accessible. A programme of special events is run each year, including the spectacular Robin Hood Festival.

A surviving example of one of the few remaining brick-built British workhouses from the 19th century. Audio guides and interactive displays describe the horrific story of the 'welfare' system of the 'New Poor Law' and the life of the poor over the last few centuries.

The museum houses a large collection of Victorian and Edwardian dolls dating back to the 18th century, including Vina Cooke hand-made character dolls. Other exhibits include dolls' houses, prams, toys, soft toys and period costumes.
