A fine example Victorian Gothic architecture, built for the grandson of pioneer lace-maker John Heathcoat, in 1869. Designed by the somewhat eccentric architect William Burgess, it has medieval style interiors with rich decoration and elaborate ceilings. The large garden is known for its rare trees and shrubs, walled garden, formal terraces and clipped topiary. The later extended 'Garden in a Wood' and 'Willow Garden' areas afford some of the loveliest woodland walks.
