A deep gorge cut by the River Lyd, with many dramatic features including the spectacular 90ft high (30m) White Lady Waterfall and a thundering whirlpool, known as the Devil's Cauldron. The gorge is about 1.5 miles long with sheer rock walls in places rising 60ft (20m) high. The river tumbles and swirls through it at the feet of tall oak and sycamore trees. There are several good marked pathways through the gorge and visitors can observe an abundance of wildlife including woodpeckers, dippers and possibly heron fishing in the waters.
Lydford Castle (12th-c) sits on the edge of the gorge. A Saxon fortress, built for defence against the Celts and the Danes, which later became notorious as a prison.
