This impressive limestone gorge lies some 6 miles (12.6 km) north-east of Wells in the Mendip Hills. It is mainly known for its deep caves where the oldest complete human skeleton in Britain (9000 year old Cheddar Man), was found in 1903. Even older remains dating back over 13,000 years have also been found. The caves were produced by water seeping through the underground limestone, the action of which has also produced many curiously sculptured stalactites and stalagmites. Cheddar Gorge and its caves are both popular visitor destinations and have been voted as one of the greatest natural wonders in Britain!

This cave is a popular tourist attraction in the small village of Wookey Hole on the edge of the Mendips, some 2.5 miles (5.25 km) to the north of Wells. It was formed by continuous erosion of the limestone bedrock by the waters of the River Axe. The cave is famous for the 'Witch of Wookey Hole', a vaguely human-shaped stalagmite on view in the first chamber of the caves. This was said to be a wicked witch turned to stone by a Glastonbury monk. The caves maintain a steady temperature of 11°C (52°F) and are said to have been inhabited by man for approximately 50,000 years. Wookey is the site of the first cave dives in Britain and has also been used to film Dr Who episodes and some from the series "Robin of Sherwood"
In addition to the spectacular floodlit limestone caves are a series of undercover family attractions. including Circus Shows, Pirates of the River Axe, Valley of the Dinosaurs and a magical fairy garden. The on-site 19th-c paper mill, which once supplied luxury paper around the world, now houses a museum, soft play rooms, mirror maze and adventure arcade.
